Review: The Piggy Banker

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

When asked to review a site, I always find it difficult coming up with the right words to say so that I not only get my point across, but I also like to not offend anyone either. Today’s review is based on thepiggybanker.com. Their tag line includes “Best CD Rates, highest savings, money market, credit card reviews & bank deals.” as someone who sees the importance behind going with a good bank, not one that will potentially rob you blind, I feel it’s important to learn a thing or two about the companies you’re interested in before you even give them your information. Resources like these could be a valuable one to anyone who uses it.

This site offers the ability for you to look through a database of the top banking companies so you can compare them based on rates and other options that would be the deciding factor on your choice of banks. They also offer the ability to find Best Credit Cards so that you can know from the get-go what you’re getting into when dealing with this company. They give honest reviews and statistics to help make your ‘shopping around’ run a little smoother.

One section I came across was a WT Direct Savings Review. WT stands for Wilmington Trust, a company that’s located in many places around the US and one I was considering when I moved to Delaware considering one of their banks are located right outside of the complex. After reading this review, however, I understand that they’re not exactly going to be the best account to go with unless I’m looking for a high yield savings account. The minimum balance required at deposit is $10,000 and any balance in the $1-$10,000 range will earn approximately 5.26% APY for the first 60 days. So after doing the math, if I happen to deposit $10,000 and then within the first 60 days, I happen to deposit another $1,000 it will give me a total of $11,578.60 in my savings account. I would assume that if I maintain over $10,000 I’ll have the same 5.26% interest, but according to the site if I’m UNDER, it drops it down to just .6% which is even less than my account with Washington Mutual that I closed before moving down here.

As far as the site goes, it primarily looks like a bankers blog. The owner compares many rates through archived blog entries and minus the banner ads spilled all over the page, it’s really not that bad looking. I would personally recommend cutting back on a few of the ads but since the user is offering a free service then I can understand why the page is loaded the way it is, it just makes it hard to actually find the CONTENT of the page considering everything valuable about the site is basically underneath all of the useless links. This is only from a design standpoint, however. The site seems to be updated on a some what regular basis though, the RSS feed shows a recent updated in Wednesday the 27th. I assume that the owner knows he has a good thing going and is going to keep up with it, as many web masters should.

Dream Home: Bed and Bath

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

With the recent house hunt, I’ve been looking into everything from floor to ceiling. I keep notes of the items I come across that I think are pretty cool. I don’t want our first home together to be that one where we bring in old materials and then just kind of throw them together. We’ve done a pretty good job of merging all of our belongings at this point, now I’d kind of like to start fresh.

We want to have some kind of a sanctuary, a place were we can just go to relax and completely get away from it all. I’d adore a place with vaulted ceilings and even ambient lighting just to set the mood for an overly relaxed atmosphere. I’ve always been a fan of big fluffy beds and just pure comfort. I don’t want to sleep on a slab of two inch mattress, I want something I can fall into and be completely lost in, I know many people that would even agree.

Off the bedroom is going to be a spa like bathroom, and for the sake of privacy I’d like to have the toilet kind of sectioned off away from the rest of the room. This way you’re kind of behind closed doors in case one has to go while the other is in the shower or soaking in the tub. I plan on doing that a lot, especially if I have a hand in which tub will actually be in the room. I’d like a big tub with jets for ultimate comfort, surrounded by candles for again for lighting so you know where you are but dark enough to the point of being completely content with everything going on around you. I want a place where I can just disappear.

Dream Bathroom I know I’d never be able to afford it unless I get really lucky with lottery numbers or if the site that Sean’s been working on actually takes off to the point that he’s earning millions of dollars. Either way I’d adore it if I could have a bathroom like this. I know the tree in the middle looks a little weird but I found it on Google so give me a break there. It’s got gorgeous lighting, a beautiful tub, a nice separate shower, and based on the description I found about it, the toilet itself is right by the main door but closed off in it’s own little ‘stall’ so to speak. But the stall is about the same size as the bathroom I’m in now and has more than enough room to even throw a table in there, something I didn’t understand but I know how men can be in the bathroom when it comes to keeping themselves busy while on the toilet, if it was organized properly – I wouldn’t mind throwing a magazine rack in there some where.

So yea, I have a dream sanctuary – while I highly doubt it will ever come true, at least I know that I’ll still have my dreams to keep me happy.

It’s time for an upgrade

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

We have a small fridge in the office, Sean’s probably owned it for years but lately it just seems too small for the both of us. I buy in bulk when it comes to water, and once that’s all in there it’s hard to hold his 2 liter bottles of soda when he’d like to have more than one in there. It’s not even that I’m taking up a lot of room, it’s just the fact that the fridge is oddly narrow so it’s hard to really fit anything in there anyway.

The fridge in the kitchen is a lot smaller than it looks as well, so the freezer in there is kind of overflowing as well. I’ve been considering investing in getting a second fridge this way the fridge itself offers more room for Sean and I and we’d also have extended freezer space for the kitchen. I’ve poked around Sears and PC Richard, the two places I would normally shop up in New York because they were so close to my house. Unfortunately there isn’t either one in the immediate area for me. I’d have to travel all the way to Salisbury, MD or straight up to Dover, DE. I’ve looked into both General Electric (GE) and Samsung Refrigerators. A few places have brought me towards Best Buy but unfortunately they’re up in Dover as well so in the long run, I’m kind of stuck.

Other searches have brought us to considering an old-school freezer in the kitchen, there’s enough space behind the bar where we could place a low profile one, just to extend freezer space in there. Unfortunately that doesn’t help us in the kitchen. I assume that when Sean gets rid of the CRT monitors and finally upgrades to LCD’s, that we’ll be able to move things around in the office and maybe fit a larger sized refrigerator in there as well.

I’d discuss this with him right now, but he’s officially passed out – so much for staying up and watching TV with me.

Prescription Drug Addiction

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

I’ve spoken about substance abuse for quite some time now, many of you know this. One subject that I haven’t touched on yet was Prescription Drug Addiction. I strongly believe, while many people say otherwise, that my friend Diana passing away a few years ago was based on her addiction to prescription drugs. She was on anti-depressants and muscle relaxers for many years after an accident that she’d had when she was 14 years old. Her and her boyfriend at the time came face-to-face with a mac truck, she was the only surviver. Naturally this put her through a horrible depression, watching someone you love die in front of you because of a careless driver is nothing anyone should go through.

She suffered with extreme back pain, shoulder problems from where the seatbelt jerked her back and a cracked rib from the air-bag. She was a very thin girl, ate like a pig but never gained an ounce kind of skinny. The meds she was later placed on only aided to further weight loss. She’d never had body issues before, but at the rate that her body was shrinking, you wouldn’t have known it. For years after this accident, everyone who knew her, went out of their way to insure that she was going to get the help she needed. She went to see counselors but with her insurance plan all they were really doing was throwing more pills at her and calling it a day. We did finally get her into a detox clinic but by then, the damage had already been done. Three days after her release from the clinic, she over-dosed on an entire bottle of muscle relaxers and Paxil.

She’s been missed for many years, her mother obviously taking it the hardest because she tried everything she could to insure that her daughter was getting the help she so desperately needed. It’s just a shame that no matter how hard you try, she was just too far gone for the help.

I thought having a bigger office meant more room?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Getting the office organized is proving to be a lot more difficult than we’d originally thought. I don’t quite know how we managed it but for some reason after moving to the larger room, we’ve managed to get MORE things without having any kind of a place for them. I’ve been looking into some office supplies in hopes that I’ll be able to come across some kind of inspiration on how to go about placing things in the room so they aren’t kind of just – thrown in there.

We have two tables between us, I’d like there to be some kind of a book case but he insists on saving computers so he can scrap them for parts and on top of that – the shelving we setup above us is a little too low for a book case to actually stand between us the way I’d like one to. I think while I’m cleaning this room up tomorrow I’m going to spend quite a bit of time reorganizing everything. Thankfully since I have an LCD monitor, having things on the desk isn’t such a big deal. What I’d like to do is pick up a monitor stand so that I can put my keyboard underneath it when I’m not using my desk – or when I’m using my laptop and my mouse/keyboard are just getting in the way. It will also give my external hard drive a permanent home instead of just having it kind of floating around the desk.

I could also do away with all of my stuffed animals and toys that are on the desk. I’d also like to get the dry-erase wallpaper so that instead of having the board standing up next to me, I can just put a big strip across the back of the desk and call it a day.

The only thing I don’t have a complaint about is the desk itself. I think this was an amazing find for $60, it’s exactly the desk I’ve wanted for many years now. A few modifications will make it absolutely perfect for me. I’m also considering getting some roll-away shelving underneath the desk itself because the space, as of right now, is only being utilized by my computer case and well…Bella. It’s shallow though, unfortunately there’s a bar underneath that could have the potential of making this a two person desk. I just don’t understand how two people could sit comfortably at this desk considering the limited space with just one person using it, let alone two.

Travel Plans: Kailua, Hawaii

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I’m sure I’ve noted it before but I’ve been looking a little bit further into the Hawaiian Beach Rentals that I’ve come across over the last few days. I found a set of houses for rent through a Kailua home rental resource and I have to say, I’m really very interested in this. The homes here are really pretty and they have such a spectacular view there’s no possible way that I could pass these opportunities over. The bulk of the listings I’ve come across are based on houses in only the $400 range that are less than a block from the beach. This means, and I’m almost certain, that at least one section of the house will actually OVERLOOK the beach. I could probably live there forever. I have no doubt in my mind about that.

Hawaii I managed to pull one of the houses off the website, this is the porch of one of the homes I was the most interested in. Now, these are only rentals but if I had the opportunity to buy, you better believe I’ll be there faster than I knew what hit me. This particular rental is a 4 bedroom home that can comfortably house 10 guests and it’s less than one block away from the beach. There are air conditioners in three of the four rooms, 3 queen beds, 2 twin beds and one sofa bed. There’s also 3 full bathrooms, high speed internet and a full kitchen. For someone spending only $575 a night, you have to admit that it’s not a bad deal at all. Figure you do actually go up with the 10 people, that’s only 57 per person, that’s less than the one room grimy hotel up the block that tourists are currently paying $75 a night for… I’d say this would be the place to go!

Wiping debt clean…

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I recently found out that my father had to take out a loan just to take care of his credit card debt. He had about 3 cards and after coming across a low interest credit card he transferred all three cards to one, began payments and then found himself taking out a loan just so he could pay it all off on one shot. Naturally I wouldn’t recommend doing this unless you absolutely have to but thanks to my mother’s love for QVC and everything HOME SHOPPING, he’s spent the last 10 years paying off close to $40,000 in credit card debts. He’s now debt free, in regards to his cards, and working on paying back the loan that he took out. By transferring all of his funds to a low-interest credit card, he actually found out that his credit score had improved. He’s now got a credit score above 760 and couldn’t be happier. His interest rates dropped, his financial standings, as a whole, have improved and he just seems like a happier person in general.

I learned a lot about credit cards from him, which is why I don’t see myself getting one anytime soon. Unless I need one for absolute emergencies then there’s really no point in spending money that I just don’t have. I understand that everyone’s situation is different and I’m, by no means, saying that you’re a complete moron if you’re depending on other’s money in order to get through daily life. However, I do strongly believe that if you can maintain a proper bank account, you won’t need to worry about going to an outside source for funding.

Resources: Calorie Counter

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Anyone on a diet knows how hard it is to find free resources to make your weight loss easier. With all of the high-priced programs out there, the last thing you want to do is spend even more money just to find out quick information about your progress, free of charge. One of the links that I’ve had on my resources list for quite some time is a free calorie counter that helps you figure out just what you’re doing throughout the day – without having to calculate points or figure out some huge math equation just so you know what you ate today. I don’t care how someone figured out that 15 mini pretzels is 1 point on weight watchers, I also don’t care to decode all of the mumbo-jumbo that had them come to this conclusion. Naturally I’m going to look for other resources that will work just fine for me, thankfully myfitnesspal.com is a 100% free no credit card required resource to help you move a long a bit further.

Keynotes

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I’m not sure why but lately I’ve seen a rise in Keynote and Entertainment speakers. For the past few months I’ve been doing some work here and there for Dick whom keynotes for businesses that what to use new media like blogs, podcasting and wikis to inform customers. I’ve actually spent quite a bit of time thumbing through his blog because he’s consistent with having an entertaining blog to keep you interested.

Up until recently, however, I had absolutely no idea what exactly a Keynote was. Based on my trusty wiki I found out that it’s a motivational speaker and the keynote is the one who kind of tells the stories behind the main speaker. I’m unsure if that’s the case, I’m sure Dick will tell me where I went wrong. But I’m basing it on the following:

A keynote in literature, music or public speaking is the principal underlying theme of a larger idea — a literary story, an individual musical piece or event. At political or industrial conventions and expositions and at academic conferences, the keynote address or keynote speech is delivered to set the underlying tone and summarize the core message or most important revelation of the event.

But, moving along. There’s a site called internationalspeakers.com that provides motivational public speakers, primarily for business. Their goal is to inspire and educate people in the corporate environment. They claim that with a celebrity speaker from their company, you can be sure that you get the attention of your employees. They give you access to successful public figures and all of them provide great programs that can be used to customize your needs. So if you’re in the market for someone to give your employee’s a stern talking to – more than likely this will be a resource that you keep in mind.

Accepting it still doesn’t make me happy

Monday, June 25th, 2007

For many years now, my grandmother has been having some serious trouble with her legs. So much so that she finds going up and down the stairs, let alone walking in general, to be nothing more than excruciating pain. A few months ago my aunt decided to call a company that designs custom stairlifts for all kinds of homes. She has one that leads to the basement so it’s easier for her to get her laundry done. My grandfather helps out as much as he can but at the moment he’s not only dealing with prostate cancer but he’s had horrible knees for as long as I can remember. They both use the stairlifts on almost a daily basis just so they can keep the house maintained. I know relatives go over to help out but when you’re closest form of help is a phone call and about 15 minutes away, anything can happen.

When it comes to the main floor of the house she alternates between her cane and her wheelchair. She’s completely capable of walking around, it’s just that if she does it too long she winds up in quite a bit of pain. Her frustration now-a-days is the fact that she’s now also dealing with arthritis. For many years she’s knitted, sewed and done everything you would expect an Italian grandmother to do. Now she’s unable to hold the needles, or even thread a spool onto her sewing machine in order to get anything accomplished, yet again she’s looked towards outside help.

Her leg problems started many years ago, she’s always had bad ankles and even with surgery to attempt to fix her problems, it only made them worse. The surgeon managed to cut into a nerve that has destroyed all possibility for a full recovery. She’s dealing with a lawsuit on top of the fact that she’s worse now than she’s ever been before, and it ticks me off to no end that this doctor claims he had nothing to do with it.

My grandfather just recently came to find out that he has prostate cancer. His prostate is so enlarged that they can’t even really begin proper cancer treatment on him. They’re giving him some kind of medication to shrink his prostate and then they’re going to work on the kemo and everything else that he would need in order to get himself all ‘fixed up’ as he puts it. Either way I know he’s in a lot of pain, who knows how much more he’ll be able to stand.

The topic of my grandparents is slowly taking it’s toll on me. I realize that they’re not going to be around for much longer and while they have all the help in the world, that still doesn’t cut down the chance that one or both of them may no longer be with us tomorrow.

Backgammon Masters have some interesting news!

Monday, June 25th, 2007

PPPA quick update for my favorite people over at backgammonmasters.com. Recently they’ve added Poker to their database. You can now play for real money. To celebrate this real money launch, they’re offering games with no house commission for a limited time. Ever since their launch, they’ve been gaining popularity with the online backgammon community, I myself am an avid player of the game online.

Now, poker fans will be able to login and play up to three game tables at a time which would overall increase their game activity and experience. Players can also play in no charge fun mode so that you don’t have to be at risk for losing any money when you go up against the professionals. For years now I’ve been playing online around Yahoo or any other site that just seems to have the game featured online, now I’m going primarily through them for all of my online gaming and I couldn’t be happier. The reason they’re gaining popularity with the online backgammon community is because of their graphically rich playing environment complete with realistic 3D avatars and sound…makes you feel as though you’re actually in the game.

For the past few weeks Sean has been playing a lot of Chess on Yahoo, little does he know that on my side of the room I’ve been fiddling around with my backgammon boards and beating the pants off anyone who comes near me. I rule like that, don’t I? He’s asked on a few occasions why we don’t personally have a backgammon board because he’d gladly play with me, the problem is he’s a pain to teach anything to, he wants to learn but I can’t even get him to put the seat down, how could I have the patience to teach him how to play? I’m sure something will work out eventually. For now, however, he has his chess and I have my backgammon!

Check out backgammonmasters.com, let’s play!

The media has more influence than I thought…

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

While many people may not realize it, cosmetic surgery isn’t just limited to beverly hills breast reduction. Sure, los angeles liposuction is extremely popular as well but the one thing that was new to me is the ethnic plastic surgery. Yes, I know it seems a little odd but face it, all of the plastic surgery stories you’d see on television are primarily just rich white women looking to improve something that doesn’t even need to be touched.

I was taken back by seeing this link, as odd as that may sound, but typically when I think ethnic I think of a black woman proud to be exactly what she is and how she is. In New York, going into stores like Dots or Rainbow you see a lot of very proud black women who aren’t complaining about being in the plus-sized section of the store, hell – them embrace it. Watching television you see influences like Monique showing off just how proud she is to be a big beautiful woman. So naturally when I hear something in regards to an ethnic woman looking to have a breast reduction, nose job, tummy tuck or all of the above, it just seems out of the norm for me.

I just still believe it’s a shame that no matter how much money you have – you can’t just be happy with who you are. I also see that in a few different ways though. Yes, I’m working on losing weight but it’s based on the fact that I’m unhappy with where I am, it’s also a health related issue. Just because you have a little extra fat on your body doesn’t mean you’re morbidly obese and should go under the knife. Someone, like myself, who’s 100lbs overweight, naturally I’m going to fix it the proper way first without depending upon a surgeon to step in, especially at what these men and women charge to slice you with all kinds of needles and knives just to fix something that can easily be adjusted without going through the pain.

A rather uncomfortable conversation

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

I have no doubt in my mind that this is a topic that most people dread to even think about but what some people don’t realize is the importance behind having some kind of a life insurance policy. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, anything could happen to you between right now and tomorrow that is 100% life changing. A few years back I looked into Affordable Life Insurance Quotes and did manage to get myself onto a plan where I pay a small amount of money each month to buy into my current $30,000 plan, naturally over the years this number will go up but I also know for sure that if something where to, god forbid, happen to me I know that my family is taken care of. Even if it’s only enough to cover funeral expenses, pay off an outstanding balance and cover any hospital fees – I know that nothing is going to be taken out of their own pockets for this.

My father has a life insurance policy, somewhere in the $80,000 range. He has one out on both my sister and myself. He’s also fully paid for his entire funeral, a conversation that I did not wish to have with the man considering we were at the breakfast table. This is a conversation that could at least have waited a few more hours so I didn’t dwell on it for the entire day, most parents don’t seem to understand that concept. His theory, however, “It doesn’t matter how or when I die, I don’t care what kind of a box I’m in or where I’m buried. Don’t say ‘he would have liked that’, I’m dead – I don’t care what things look like!” I was taken back by this, but I can understand where he’s coming from. Some people treat funerals as though they were weddings where they go crazy with flowers, music, dressing things up that don’t really need any dressing up. My father, being so set in his ways, would be happy in a pine box in the back yard with a few chairs setup. Naturally this isn’t how it’s going to happen but again – he’s dead, he doesn’t care anyway. God I hated that conversation with him.

But anyway, back to my original point. Having a life insurance policy could be good for all of those involved. It shows that you’re fully accepting the fact that you’re moving on and not leaving excess weight on the shoulders of your loved-ones after you pass on. My father claims he did it to prove that he can and will do anything for his girls, and considering I’ve taken a policy out on myself, as well, I know that I’m also going to be doing it for my loved ones.

I’d love to live here!

Hawiian Beach Rentals - Cove For many years I’ve wondered just what it would take for me to get to Hawaii. I believe the entire state is gorgeous and couldn’t understand why people could find frustration with the palm trees, clean sandy beaches and gorgeous blue water, minus the fact that a few sun-burns are forming at this very moment. For many years I’ve been interested in learning more about Hawaiian Beach Rentals because I would truly love to spend some much needed R&R on their gorgeous chunk of land. The homes are beautiful, the cultures down there are a whole mix of beauty that only locals can seem to understand and even from there.

As you can tell by the image above, the place is nothing more than spectacular, with a view like this – how could you NOT find something to love about Hawaii. I looked into some pricing on the big island hawaii luxury homes and while I find them to be a tad bit on the expensive side, I also know that if I did actually have that kind of money, I’d be there in a heart beat.

So you tell me, if you had the money to live in Hawaii and were only basing it on the image above – would you?

I must learn to pace myself!

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been looking heavily into Graphics Cards. The one I’m working off of at the moment is the standard integrated card that’s shared, I’d like to have a separate card so that I can regain some of my ram. I’ve settled on the card that I’d like but a feeling in the pit of my stomach is telling me that I’m making the wrong choice. Whenever I go to purchase anything for my computer I set myself in an estimated price range this way I can make it a point to stick with a budget. Naturally when I find something that’s way below budget, I not only get giddy but I also get greedy.

See, when I say I’m willing to spend maybe $250 on a Graphics card and I happen to come across the exact card I’m in the market for which is in the price range of only $100. I instantly think “Ooh, I’ve got $150 for something else!” this state of mind absolutely has to stop but I have an addiction to shiny computer parts and that’s just too bad for my bank account. So now that I’ve found the picture perfect graphics card for myself I’ve switched my gears and am now looking around for a second monitor and the little $15 adapters so I can run dual monitors with my dual DVI slots. I’m not quite sure if I’m saying that properly, I’m sure Sean will let me know if I’m wrong here. (Just asked, I’m right…women typically are.)

Anyway, so now that I feel as though I have the ‘extra funds’ for something new, I’ve been abusing my database full of coupon codes (thanks to KeepCash.com) and I’m poking around hundreds of sites in search for a second monitor. My issue here is that I’d like to get the exact same one. I have this thing about everything matching but I believe that my model of monitor is no longer being made. So if you’re interested in helping me on my quest, please let me know if you happen to come across an X2Gen 17″ LCD Black/Silver monitor. I’ll gladly give you a cookie.

I’m sure you’re saying “Uhm, Google gave me X amount of links with that search!”. I’m fully aware of what Google spews out with it’s search queries. However, the monitor I own has X2gen written on the bottom silver bar right above the power button. The ones I’ve come across all have them in the upper left hand corner. This doesn’t match and again, I’m picky! So if you happen to see one that has the x2gen written on the bottom then send that link over as soon as possible! I’ll bake and ship a few dozen cookies – I swear!

Maybe I’m just too dumb?

For the past few months I’ve spent countless hours working towards some form of financial aid to get myself into college. I’ve gone through scholarship applications, financial aid information and I’ve even began looking into some level of secured loans that only seem to make sense to the lenders and not me, the person who’s going to have to pay all of this back. I go in to ask about a student loan and he gives me a run-around about secured home loans and bad credit secured loans. None of this will help me. I don’t know if it was his first day on earth, let alone his first day on the job, but when you’re asking about a student loan – where exactly do home loans come into the mix? I’m not buying the school, I’m just paying tuition here! I know that I can Google resources on the internet but I keep getting links in regards to Secured Loans UK and other countries where I’m not even ELIGIBLE for them!

If anyone of my visitors knows anything about the loan process, other than just having to deal with some guy in a suit telling me what’s good for me, could you please kick some information my way? It would be greatly appreciated!
